Juxtaposition Post

Sheryl Crow had some interesting lyrics in her song "Woman in the White House". This song is extremely sexist. She mentions all these characteristics of women and how these characteristics would help benefit the country. In this song Sheryl Crow is making it seem like men couldn't do half the things women could, because in her eyes women know how to do so much more. She mentions how women have more common sense, women know when to and not to spend money, and that women know how to manage money a lot better. She makes it seem like a women would do the job so much better than any of the men who have been President. She people to respect women and have people okay with a woman running the country, but the image she chose for this song contradicts everything.
Sheryl Crow probably isn't the only female who would like to see woman have a chance at running the White House. She could have done a better way of expressing her thoughts. I'm sure this song will sell well because it is catchy and slightly funny. However, no one is going to take her seriously. The image for this song makes it look like having a woman as President would just be a joke. The White House is between a pair of female legs wearing high heels, and I'm assuming that she is wearing a short skirt. Sheryl Crow wants people to take women seriously as a part of politics but she picked a "sexy" image instead of a more modest, serious image. Sheryl Crow could have easily made her point better by "pointing less fingers" in her song. This song would be taken more seriously if it wasn't so goofy sounding.

  1. Andra, do you think that she made it have a catchy tune so that it would make people buy her music and listen to her song? I think maybe she is implying that women should be taken more seriously in politics but she is showing you how most men would view a woman in the job by using the CD cover that she did?

Also, do you think that she was being sexist towards men in the White House, or women?
