Media Bias

Two examples of Mr. Cline's bias came to mind while I watched this video. The first example of bias this video displays is commercial bias. The topic of abortion is a highly debated topic that a lot of people have interest in. The two groups, pro-life and pro-choice are very passionate about their stance. For some people the candidate's stance on abortion alone will influence who they vote for. Since the topic is so highly debated upon, many people will be attracted to the title of the news report. Listeners will want to stay tuned to see what Mr. Romney has to say. CNN knows that people are interested in this topic, which means more viewers and more money for them. The election is probably the most talked about news on television right now. People are very passionate about the candidate they support, and some want to hear what the candidates have to say on every topic. By presenting this to the public CNN understands that they will receive many views.

The second bias that this video displays is temporal bias. With the election coming up and the debates that are currently going on, the topic is in the immediate. People want to know now what President Obama and Governor Romney's stances are on many highly debated topics. The news cast needs to show this to keep the public up to date on the candidates' ever-changing ideas. The video updates the listener on Romney's changed stance on abortion. With not a whole lot to cover other than the election the news is trying to discuss as many different ideas they can. They are probably trying to stay away from talking about the same thing all of the time. They might be trying to avoid talking about highly discussed topics like Obamacare so the listener can hear something new and different.

  2. This video portrays temporal bias at the max because the media is trying to scrap up any information they can against or for the candidates to keep things new and interesting for the audience to watch. So many people are worried about abortion and pro-life/pro-choice it lights a fire in people’s eyes. I do not understand why exactly though, I feel like the nation has much bigger issues but I guess they have to go where the public leads them. When I was scanning through these articles this one also struck my eyes and I almost thought about clicking on it and doing my essay on it just because abortion is very controversially and Romney often takes viewpoints that are highly different than mine. Also I noticed throughout the videos many of them focused on Mitt Romney and not Obama. I believe this is because the majority of America does not know much about Romney expect that he is Republican and wants to learn more about the other possible candidate for the next presidency. We have already heard a lot of about Obama because of the previous election, which makes him old news. I think this is another use of temporal bias for Romney.
