Since I work at a bank I decided to use one of their signs
that the bank puts up for my blog. The purpose of the sign is to inform the stakeholders
(non-customers) of the bank what the bank’s rules are for cashing checks. The sign
says that any non-customers that wish to cash their payroll or government checks
will be charged a fee and an I.D. is required. It is also to inform non-customers
that if you do not have an account with our bank and you wish to cash a
personal check, you will not be able to. Just glancing at the sign informs people
on what it is about since it has a heading called check cashing policy; it
clearly shows what the sign is about. The sign is easy to read since it is
printed in bold and with the lettering “DO NOT” and “PROPER I.D. MAY BE
REQUIRED” highlighted. By highlighting those words it informs the reader of the
sign not to skip over that part and pay close attention. The use of red lettering is also helpful to
get the message across because it stands out, showing that the statement is
important. Overall, the sign gets the message across clearly.
The sign’s
use of participatory design was used particularly well and does not need many
changes. Some things that the stakeholders
could want to improve on the sign are to make it larger. If the sign was larger
people standing in line could read it from far away and know if they have
everything to cash the check or if they are not able to before they get to a
teller station. Another thing the stakeholders might want to improve on the
sign is to have the “1% FEE” highlighted so it is easier for them to see what the
percent fee is. Some may say that the heading of the paper could be improved by
making it larger so it stands out more. The sign is stated pretty clearly
leaving little room for someone to get confused from it. Overall, the sign
states from the beginning what it is about and says the information quickly,
while not making it confusing.
