Barack Obama e-mail

The e-mail Barack Obama supposedly “sent out” is very simple.  I would think that if you were trying to raise money for your own campaign to get re-elected you would give a little more effort.  My personal thought is that the president, Barack Obama did not send out this message.  This e-mail does not show a good understanding of the implied rhetorical situation.  The e-mail doesn’t state what the purpose of giving money is for; obviously we know it’s for his campaign.  The e-mail try’s to reach out to the recipient by calling them their friend when in reality they don’t know who or anything about the recipients in the message.  How many people would respond to this message by actually donating money?  The writer of the e-mail put little effort into this task.  This email wasn’t directed to kids it’s directed to young adults and up.  I would have taken a better approach in writing this e-mail.  In order to understand this e-mail you will have to know what is currently going on with our government and the elections.  The writer leads us on to believe that he supports this topic, but he doesn’t express that to the reader.  All he/she asks for is the donation of money.

During this short e-mail the writer draws the reader in by saying Hey, friend.  The writer acts casual and talks out to the reader as if he knows them.  By doing this it makes us, (the readers) feel as we matter to the campaign and to the president.  The vocabulary used is very informal.  It’s like you were talking to someone you know rather than someone you didn’t. Not that many people are actually going to donate $3 online.  That would require the use of a credit card or a check and for most people it’s a bigger hassle to go through all of the steps so the wont donate $3.  Also, if the writer really wanted you to donate I don’t think that they would have sent an e-mail the day the wanted people to donate the money.  In order to really lure the reader into this topic the writer should have added a little bit more text and meaning to the e-mail.  This would have allowed the reader to feel like he was really trying to reach out and communicate with the recipient.  If Barack Obama wants to get re-elected he needs to reach out to the people because they are the reason it will happen.

  1. Nick, I agree with your analysis of Mr. Obama's alleged email. You would think that a government official with his power he would maybe take a little bit more time and put a little pride in this if he is raising money. Also, I don't know of anybody that would honestly donate their own money to someone through an email because you can never be entirely sure that it could be a ploy to take people's money. You make a good point the writer never really says he supports the topic so that could maybe be more evidence that this isn't a legit message for a campaign donation. You would hope the President would get somebody to write that would have some feeling because more than likely he would want to get re-elected and this really isn't helping his cause. One thing you said that I think the writer did that was a positive was he talked to the reader like he was a friend and sometimes you can butter someone up like that then they will give you what you are looking for. Mr. Obama did not do a very great job in writing this email.

  2. I coincide with you that the text is much too informal then it should be but I think this was because someone over thought the situation. This is something the writer should have put little effort into and kept it simple. The person who made this put too much thought into thinking addressing people as friends would gain votes because people would see Obama as a friend rather can a high ranking politician. From what I have read of most people blogs, this completely back fired on the writer. Most people saw it as phony and comical that the President was referring to their teacher as friend.
I agree with your statement that adding text would have benefited the email tremendously. The note itself, even for political propaganda, does not explain anything. It is like someone coming up to your door and saying can you donate three dollars and no I do not know what you are donating it too. Of course you could take the time out to visit the link or pull up some article but let’s be honest; very few people are actually going to take the time out to do this. One of the things I think that actually went right with this email is putting Barack Obama’s name back out there on the Internet and what better way is there then sending an email out to a majority of Yahoo’s website.
