Lyrical Rhet

How many problems with teen bullying have recently come up in society and what do you think would be able to help point out how serious stopping it needs to be? Honestly When I first heard the song Pumped Up Kicks on the radio, I thought to myself how catchy is this song and tune. Then the more I listened to the song I caught some of the lyrics and to say the least, I was a bit shocked on how crazy they were. In all seriousness I thought I was hearing the words wrong. Looking up the lyrics and the meaning behind this song by Foster The People really changed the way I looked at the song. When I used to hear it on the radio it was just another song until I began listening to the lyrics. My interest in figuring out what the lyrics meant grew as well. The song is a little eye opener for people who are just thinking its another song. Pumped Up Kicks was written by the lead singer of Foster The People, Mark Foster. He wrote this song to make people become more aware of how dangerous and common teen bullying is becoming.
Foster wrote this song and put a little catchy tune with it for a reason. You hear this really cool catchy song on the radio and then learn the lyrics and then figure out the story behind them. It was a great idea and plan that Mark Foster and his band had. This was their way of getting their song out and where most of the public would be able to hear it. The more people that hear the song, is the more people that get to understand what Foster The People are trying to get out to the public. The genre of music is alternative and indy pop. Which a lot of young teens and also some adults listen to these genres. The message behind this song is to get people to realize bullying needs to stop. This song truly is about a kid wanting to shoot others, which is a very scary and touchy subject considering all the teen violence and school shootings that have happened here recently. This song I think has done its job, and made people realize the seriousness of teen bullying. What a great idea and strategy that Mark Foster had, such a genius plan!

  1. When I first listened to the song, I also thought that it was very catchy and then when I read the lyrics and started to listen a bit more carefully, it changed my whole perspective on the song. I was also a bit shocked on how crazy the lyrics turned out to be. I never would have guessed that this upbeat and catchy song had such a horrific meaning behind it. I also think that this song has done its job by making people realize the seriousness of teen bullying. Not many people realize how dangerous it could really be until it actually happens. Mark Foster did such a terrific job publishing this song. He made the song very popular with its upbeat rhythm, causing people to listen to this song quite often. Like you said, the song is a little eye opener for people who are just thinking it is another song. It really is because before listening to this song, I never really listened to the words because I thought since it was such an upbeat song; the lyrics would be somewhat happy and not so violent. This song can help children who are being bullied and it could hopefully let them realize that violence is not the only way for solving their problems.

  2. After I heard the song for the first time I hated it! everytime it came on the radio I would change the station. After I finally listened to the song and looked up the lyrics to see what the song was saying I hated the song even more. In my opinion I thought the band sent out the wrong message for their fand to here. Mark Foster had a hard time with putting his music out there, once he released this song on the internet it became a hit by the catchy tune and then some people liked his lyrics or better yet some people may not have gotten what he was talking about. The way I took the song was telling people bullying is bad, so if your the one gettig bullied go ahead and fantasize your killing spree. There are a lot of other ways to get the message across to stop bullying! I understand that bullying is bad but saying " all the kids in the pumped up kicks better run run from my gun" is sending the wrong messege! The message I got from the lyrics is saying its okay to get a gun and to go on killing spree for revenge.
