Political Rhetoric Analysis

When I first glanced at this picture, I noticed that the young student was holding a large bag on his back that said, "college tuition" on it. The large bag represents the amount of money students are required to pay for college every year, and how ridiculously big of an amount it is. Almost all college students now a days can relate to that. On the right of the picture, we see another man and he is dressed in formal attire and probably works for the administration for a college or university. He states, "Oh stop bellyaching, it's just 5% more than last year." This shows the relationship between some college administrators and the fact that they don't think raising prices on tuition is a big deal. With the economy bad enough as it is, raising prices on education is just going to cause more of a predicament. I think the reason why the author used an image instead of a text is because you can understand and comprehend the idea visually easier, rather than just reading some statements about college tuition. The image does communicate well with our generation because tuition prices are increasing more and more every year, which is increasing stress on the students and maybe even some of our parents as well.
The oppressive language that is featured in this image is the way the man on the right dressed in formal attire states his views on the raising of student tuition. He just assumes that it is not a big deal, since it is only 5% more than last year. I believe that it was a good thing for the author to add that quote because a lot of college administrators just care about earning money for their schools, rather than if it is going to be difficult for the students to aquire that amount of money to attend school. Yes it is true that one of the reasons why some colleges have to raise tuition is because of the government's crack down on state funding, but the prices for tuition are just too over exaggerated We need to go to school to get a good job, but we need a good job to go to school. The whole system of tuition prices are just contradicting. Overall, I think the image really sticks out and has very clear communication to it. It reflects on a lot of society, mostly on students, but it can also relate to parents as well, or even some adults that are going back to school to get an education.

  1. Your image that you decided to write about instantly stuck out to me from the other ones that I looked through. It stuck out to me because I am paying for my whole college by myself and I feel the same exact way this boy does; carrying this heavy of a load is extremely difficult. When you stated that some college administrators do not think it is a big deal to raise prices on college tuition, I could not agree more. I think that as long as they have their money and their college is being successful, then they do not seem to care on the price of education whatsoever. Since the economy is on a downfall and has been for a while, and with tuition just getting increased year by year, this will cause many people to not want to further their education and go to college. I also like that you stated with prices getting increased, it is putting a lot more stress on the students and even the parents. The colleges do not understand how hard it is for students to pay for college because they do not have to do it.
