Oppressive Language

Oppressive language is everywhere these days; and sometimes people do not even know it is around them. Coming across this image was quite comical for me, only if you have a sense of humor of course. Just looking at this image, you can see what it is telling you. This particular image is stating that since the tragic event of 9/11 occurred ten years ago, our United States is not standing together like it, and that is why the jacket does not properly fit this man who cannot zip it or even get it across his stomach. I believe without the man even stating "It fit 10 years ago," is not even necessary to understand what this particular image is telling you. It may give you a better understanding, but you can tell that the jacket simply says United We Stand and cannot zip or fit properly. I believe this piece of communication was very successful because it was short, sweet, and to the point. The author used an image text instead of an alphabetical text simply because the picture does not need a lot of explaining to do to get its point across. The author of this photo did get their message across because they are right; the United States is not like it was ten years ago.

Oppressive language is quite obvious in this picture. It is stating that America is basically falling apart due to the tragedy ten years ago. This article is involving many of the people in America; the government, the citizens, and the different political parties. I think when the author stated “it” did fit ten years ago, is directed towards all Americans because we need to realize as a country, that we are falling apart. We should not have to have a horrible tragedy happen again just so our United States can come back together like it did ten years ago. I believe the author of this image used the specific text to have the people viewing it have a better understanding of what the image is really stating here. I think the author used this type of oppressive writing because not many people realize that America is not as united as it was ten years ago. Our Americans came together for just about everything that was going on in our world; now it is hard to even have the government agree on certain situations.

  1. I also find this image quite comical. The fact that the author used an overweight man to display the image of the actual photo was obviously an attention getter. I think it gets the point across very well, I mean the use of a zipper is a great thought of "staying together" so to say. After some thought, I came to a conclusion that some people may not understand that this particular photo is about 9/11, even though it says ten years ago. Maybe the author could have stated that, but then again that is just how I perceived the photo.I think that both uses of text with this photo are needed. Without one, I don't know if many would understand, and of course the "united we stand" is basically the main point. In my opinion, I feel as if the author chose a good picture, but there could have been many other ways to show the united states doens't stand together. I somewhat think that the choosing of this photo could be part of the oppressive language. Maybe not to argue the particular point, but to argue another point about America. Either way this piece is oppressive and got my attention right away.

  2. The way you explained this picture is definetely on point. I also find this image pretty comical. The way the author used a jacket saying "united we stand" on an over weight man makes the satement very clear. The United states has definetely been a different country since the 9/11 tragedy. The picture is getting its point acrossed to me very well. I agree with you the oppressive language is quite obvious. especially with the zipper not being able to zip. that is stateing how our united states has fallen apart since the terrible tragedy. You would think with that happening it would make the united states stonger and more aware of our surrounding. I also agree with you that we as a country are not united like we were ten years ago. Our country no longer as peace anymore it seems like. Just like you said we can't even have the government come to an agreement on anything, its always a huge debate for months and years. In conclusion the image the author chose like you said gets its point acrossed very well. I enjoyed reading your blog.

  3. At the first site of the image I thought that it was quite comical as well, but if you take the time and think about it it is kind of sad that we have let something so tragic completely tear out nation apart. I agree with you when you said that the words where not even needed for this piece to be interpreted. It goes without saying what this piece is actually trying to say and it was communicated very successfully. I also agree with the message and what it was saying to the fullest. We have fallen apart as a nation and do not stand as united as we did ten years ago. You would think that by now we would know how to handle things and get back on track so that we can be united once again but that just simply isn't the case for us right now. Like you, I think that the words just give the picture even more meaning and make it even more deep than what it already is. For anybody that doesn't understand it just by looking at it they should understand it after they read the words. If not then they are simply not living in reality.

  4. You definitely hit the nail on the head with this picture. And you're right, the words are not needed, although are probably just used to clarify what event in our history is being referenced. The fact the the "United We Stand" is split apart (not united) is a great play on words (and images) and relates so much information and meaning with that simple piece. Out country has become to separate itself, in many different ways. People have stopped meeting in the middle, everything is an extreme, black and white life, with no room for grey in the middle. And it's not possible for a nation to operate like that. We need a little give and take to keep things going. We have to be able to tolerate the people we despise so that we can achieve a common goal. We have to remain United. This was a great picture and it truly does mean more than what you simply see at first glance.
