Advertising Rhetoric and Maslow Blog Post

For my piece of advertising that I choose, I choose the woman that looks a hot mess due to drinking a lot of alcohol. Everybody knows that alcohol can really damage your body physically and mentally while intoxicated.  Her make-up is done as though she had done it while intoxicated; she has several wrinkles and puffiness around the entire face, especially the eyes. This woman has clearly lost her mind, and her inability to drink a minimum amount of alcohol. Though this picture looks extreme, it truly is what some women look like. When you become addicted to drugs or alcohol you look that ability to try or even care about your physical appearance. Drinking is the only thing that becomes important to you anymore. The company DASL that is using this piece of advertising is actually a charity in London helping the community fight problems with drug and alcohol misuse.
When looking at Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, I chose that this piece fitted self-actualization.  The self-actualization is described as morality, creativity, problem solving, lack of prejudice, and acceptance of facts. In order to overcome the alcohol abuse you first need to accept the facts, that you are addicted, and then solve this problem. This add makes the message effect in doing so that it has what you may look like if you become addicted and overstep the boundaries. Let’s face it no one ones to actually look like this, and if they don’t want to look like this then they aren’t going to do this. If someone who was addicted to alcohol and seen this they could become encouraged to get help and end this battle.  I think this piece of advertising was a good choice with this charity due to seeing the actual physical effects alcohol can do to you and make people realize that’s what they could look like one day.

  1. When I saw this picture my reaction was "oh gosh that's an ugly woman". This picture portrays a female that has been taken over by the use of alcohol or drugs. As you can see she has let herself go, which is a side effect of too much alcohol consumption. I really think you hit it head on when you said it would be placed in the self-actualization category. If you are not able to function under these circumstances you should not be allowed to drink, point blank. I agree completely with your thought on this whole topic. I believe that this could also fall into the safety category as well. I mean lets be honest these bad habits can damage your well being and turn you into a very unhealthy person. When I began reading your blog post I knew what other category this topic was going to be in. Alcohol can ruin your entire life, especially if you get too addicted to it.
