Rhetorical Analysis on Media Bias

While watching this video, I got horrible cringes throughout my whole entire body. In this video, a mother from Texas, Elizabeth Escalona, gets the sick idea to glue her 2-year-old child's hands against a wall while she decides to beat her until she cannot seem to do so anymore. This video uses visual bias and also bad news bias. I believe that this particular video is visual bias for a few reasons. My first reason would be that the child, who was beaten by her mother, has bruises, massive red marks and welts from the horrible incident. You can even see certain hand imprints from the mother on numerous spots on her body. Her body was covered in horrible markings and they were quite evident in this video. Showing these horrific markings on the child’s body grabbed my attention immediately and that is what they were trying to do here. You can also see how this tragic situation seemed to affect the people involved in it. The pediatrician, Amy Barton, who examined the toddler after the incident, was extremely shocked about the situation. Her emotion on her face showed how horrific the event was to her. It also showed from Elizabeth’s mother, when she was questioned in court. Her emotion on her face was also quite evident. She was extremely shocked and also seemed to be very disappointed.

I also believe that this video uses bad news bias. I think that it used bad news bias because this event is definitely a horrible event, but it is something that does not usually tend to happen on a day to day basis. This is the first story that I have ever heard of that is this terrible. I think the news decided to cover this specific story is to grab viewers’ attention as quickly as they can and they did a good job at doing that.

  1. I completely agree with you on the two biases displayed in the video. The visual images of the child who was beaten were very nerve racking. Without the images, however, the news cast would have been a lot less interesting to the public. The news story used the images very well to depict the severity of the crime the woman had committed. I agree when your talk about how the images of the mother and the pediatrician faces display how horrific the crime was. I also think that the news story used bad news bias to help attract viewers. A lot of people are interested in hearing such bizarre stories. It seems as if all news stories these days are related to violence, but that is what the public seems to want. Like Mr. Cline states, good news is boring news. People want watch violence or other bad things because it is a lot more interesting than normal news stories.

I would have to say the video also displays temporal bias. The news story is not really something that will affect many people. The news channel may not have had anything else to cover so they chose this story. They may have also been trying to come up with something new and out of the ordinary. Since the crime was so bizarre the news channel might have been trying to appeal to more people by displaying something so out of the ordinary. The story seems to be something that is fresh, and it something on the news other politics. This can help attract views because it is probably a lot more interesting to them compared to politics.

  2. The two categories you chose for your video go with it perfect. I completely agree. Child abuse or any typer of abuse is never okay. But it seems to be even worse when its someone that can't defend or stick up for themselves. And too make it so the two year old can't get away is even more horrible. I will never understand how anybody can do this to their own childen. Or to anybody at that.

Another category I picked up on was the Bad News bias. Bad or horribly sick stories like this one will always make it in the news or tv somehow. If there is a story like this then someone is going to show it on TV, or talk about it on the radio or anything. Bad stories is what makes people watch and pay attention to the story. If it was a story about an old woman working in her garden vs. a story about someone almost beating their two year old child to death. People are going to choose the abuse one. If they didn't have bad news to air nobody would really be interested in watching it. And when you really start to think about it it's sickening. Why are we as people so attracted to the bad that's going on in the world rather than the good? I myself am not sure. But that seems to be the case.
