Advertising Rhetoric

In this post I will be analyzing the DirectTV commercial with the "undesirables." I chose this because I thought it was the most humorous. The use of humor in all of the DirectTV commercials seems to work in their favor. People these days seem to love humor, and I think DirectTV has the right idea in these commercials. By using humor in the commercials, DirectTV can catch the attention of the audience. This draws the audience into the commercial, which means the audience has a better chance of watching the whole thing and seeing the purpose. The purpose of the commercial is to persuade people with cable television to change to DirectTV. To persuade the audience, DirectTV provides a situation that shows how many problems can be avoided by switching to DirectTV. The commercial shows how having cable is a hassle, and DirectTV can relieve all of the problems. The whole concept seems to work since they have produced five commercials with the same ideas.

DirectTV's directed audience in this commercial works in their favor also. The audience they are going for are "normal" people. These people can relate to this commercial because they do not want to become "undesireables," or a subculture group. However, if someone would compare themselves to be similar to the "udesireables," they should be offended. If I was in their position, I definitely would not subscribe to DirectTV. The commercial basically displays that they are not very accepted in society. However, the fact that the majority of people would not consider themselves similar to the "undesireables" should not hurt DirectTV too much. Overall, the majority of people will probably see the commercial as humorous. The people at DirectTV seem to know what they are doing when making commercials. The commercials must be  bringing in more customers if they have produced five similar commercials.

  1. A lot of people seem to think that the purpose of Direct TV’s ads is to persuade people to use their service so these bad things don’t happen to them. I don’t think this is the case because it is highly unlikely for any of these events to happen. The events serve only to humor the audience. I don’t think Direct TV is trying to say that these problems are a result of cable and that they can be avoided, I think they just serve to entertain. The target audience for this ad most certainly appears to be “normal” people. Normal being the average American citizen. As for the comedy standpoint, the commercial does its job fairly well as it goes from a couple of believable events to spiraling out of control to ultimately end up with an outcome no one expected. I know this as a fallacy in reasoning, but here it is intentional to convey comedy. As for the group that would be considered “undesirables” I do not think that they would care how a TV ad would portray them. I know many who would fit into such a category and they would like being portrayed as something most people don’t like because they enjoy to rebel.
