Workplace Rhetoric

This is a sign that hangs in the back room at my job, Subway. I think there are a few things that make this sign successful. First of all, the fact that the sign is bright yellow. It draws your attention, and draws your eye to it as soon as you walk into the back. I also think it is successful because it is short and sweet, it gets directly to the point. Even though the sign just says smile, it also suggest other things. Instead of just "smiling" it tells the stakeholders that you should watch what you do, because the cameras are watching. It is a reminder to follow all of the rules of the workplace without really saying "follow the rules". I also think that the fact that it has a smiley face, could encourage the stakeholders to smile before they walk to the front. The sign isn't small, so I know there is no way the stakeholders could miss it.

I feel as if the participatory design could be improved if costumers could see it. The customers one are not aware that they are on camera, until they see the camera itself. If they sign were displayed to customers, this may re insure them that everything is done properly, and that their food will be safe. I think that the fact the sign says "smile" may make the customers feel a bit uncomfortable because they could possible think that the stakeholders are only smiling because they have to. I do believe that this sign being in the back of the store for the stakeholders to see is very beneficial. Either way, I find the use of this sign in any restaurant or business is a good thing. It instills and re insures the customer that everything is being ran the way it should be.

  1. This sign is shown just about everywhere since so many workplaces do have cameras. It does a great job of being noticeable with its bright colors with its big and bold text. I think that it helps create a very safe environment because if somebody were to come in and cause trouble, the camera will catch it all. It also lets people know that if you do not follow the rules in this particular place, it can result in some consequences since you are being watched. It shows the stakeholders a couple of things. It shows them to do what you are supposed to be doing because you are being watched at all times. Like you said, it is also reminding them to have a big and bright smile on your face, just like the yellow smiley face being shown. This piece of rhetoric for the particular situation is effective because it will make the workers and even customers think twice about any negative decision they are about to do.
