Examining Advertising Assignment 1

Direct TV uses a lot of humor to try and get people to stop using cable and switch over to their company. Regardless, it may be dark humor but they still use humor to try to catch the viewers attention to make them want to switch. They take situations of people that might not be living the best life ever to get you to make your decision. With the way they do it it's almost like you would have to have a sense of humor otherwise you will just think the commercials are dumb and pointless. There is also a good chance that what they make fun of in their commercials could seriously offend certain groups of people.

For instance, stop taking in stray animals. That alone could offend a variety of people. It's making fun of people that don't really "have a life." And could even bother people that are animal lovers. And saying that if you do take in stray animals that your life is going to be dull and you will just stay in the house all the time. How they present the commercial is funny and it grabs a lot of people's attention but that could do the opposite of benefit them in the same way. Because then again, they are making fun of people. And the group of people that are bothered by it aren't going to go and support their product, so in a way them using this type of humor could actually prevent them from gaining customers. They use real life problems to make fun of and gain business from. The people that it doesn't affect or bother will be fine and think it's hilarious. But for someone who has been an animal lover all their lives and always believed in helping the ones who really needed it would be against these commercials. They probably would not find it funny if it was something they were passionate about.

  1. I had the exact same feelings about this commercial that you did. It could possibly offend some people who care for animals, or people who do have animals. My grandmother feeds some of the strays in her neighborhood, and she's one of the most energetic and busy people I know. These commercials are over-generalized in their statements, both of what will happen to you and the "cable is bad" part, they aren't based in an ounce of reality, and they contain no relevant information in them. The end of the commercials simply state that we should try DirectTV. The only positive impact these commercials have is that the humor draws us to DirectTV and might make us a little curious, just for humors' sake.
