Sitting down and watching the news really isn’t my thing. So, for this post I got online and watched the first video I saw and went with it. I ended up finding the story rather interesting. It was about a 14 year old female Pakistan activist that was shot, because she was fighting for the right for girls to be educated. This bit of information is definitely a bad news bias. There is nothing good being said in the video. It makes you afraid to stand up for your beliefs and makes you think more of the risks that are associated with these types of situations rather then the good that comes out of it. Truth is, before this video, I didn’t know anything about this girl and the cause she was fighting for. Which makes since, people are always more attracted to the dramatic news that has some sort of an impact and attracts emotion rather then something that has no effect on them.

It really amazed me how fast the news got out about this shooting. It just happened yesterday and now, less then 24 hours later, there is some new story or video about this young girl everywhere I look. It really is something very big right now with the war that is going on over there. Another interesting aspect to this story is since the 9/11 attacks in the United States we have been defending ourselves against foreign aggressors like the Taliban. This new story is reflective of the Taliban shooting a Pakistani citizen, because of her beliefs that every girl deserves an education. This incident has brought a new focus on continuing the fight for human rights. This one young lady has worked towards uniting the country and to keep fighting for what we know to be right. Although this video is temporal to what is going on right now, there will soon be something new that arises and this will be a story of the past.

  1. It is easy to see how this video displays bad news bias as well as temporal bias. I also see narrative and visual bias in this story as well. It is narrative bias because it is told as the same format as a story. The audience was given the facts of the situation in the form a story about this girl and how tragic it is that this happened. Everything we are told nowadays is told in the form of a story because that is how most people prefer to hear their news. They don’t want just the facts; they want the story leading up to the actual event and are interested in how this came to be. It is also done in this manner so the audience can better understand the event and all of its implications. If the story had just stated that a 14 year old girl had been shot in the middle-east, no one would care, but if it was about an activist against the Taliban who was 14 and that the Taliban had retaliated, then the story is far more interesting.
As for this story being visual bias it is quite clear. They show pictures of her before the shooting and a proud young woman who voiced her opinion no matter what. Then they show pictures of her injured and in an ambulance being taken to the hospital. These images help emphasize how tragic that this happened really is. If you hear someone was involved in a car accident, but is stable and “fine”, then you might not care as much as you would if you see the injuries that that person had sustained. Without images it is much more difficult to properly portray the gravity of the event. So in this case visual bias is good because more people will care about the fate of this young girl.
