Media Biases

http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/10/justice/jerry-sandusky-victim-impact/index.html?iref=allsearch

There are two biases that are very noticeable in this video. With the Sandusky video, due to what happened, this reflects the Bad News bias. Bad news bias is that nothing good happens in the world. This causes viewers to feel that the world around them is not safe, even more violent that it actually is. The roll this plays in society is to get people to panic. This makes people worry more about things that are happening in another part of the country rather than things that are happening closer to where the person lives. The other bias that is very easy to spot is a time bias.

Bad news bias causes unneeded chaos and makes people fear for situations arising and causing problems for other people. Child pedophilia is wrong and Sandusky needs to pay for what he did. Bad news is psychologically more likely to stick with the viewer because we are a people that soak up all the bad things come up that is not something that is either caught or reported. This is the easiest bias that is a part of the media to spot because when watching the news all that is ever covered is all about the terrible things that are happening all over the world.

The time bias on this video was easy to find. I did a little research on what the last video posted on this topic was and it has been nearly four months since any news source has posted anything new for the Sandusky case. I feel that this is important because there is no other information really given since the initial accusation or the trial’s beginning. The timing is important because it has been about a year since the start of the scandal. Now that this monster has been convicted, there are a lot of stories and videos being posted to cover what this sick old man said to those that he hurt in such a way that they will probably never recover from. Since there has not been much posted since July, this is all very new information. Now, all the news stations are doing their best to get the most current and up to date information to try and have the best information.

  1. Baylea this was a very good video to pick considering over the past year what all has came about with this sick old man. You are exactly right about the Bad News Bias. The united states has brain washed us into believing the worst in pretty much everything. We Americans just have that awful mind set. But honestly Sandusky is very big proof that there really are nasty, bad people out in the world. He should most definitely get a really horrible punishment for what he has done to these poor children. And you are also very true, that news about sandusky has been very minimal for a while until now. The news is all about bringing up the bad things going on around the world. Hardly do you ever find that there is good things on the news. Its all about the bad things that we have to hear about.
I think this video also is a video on the Fairness bias. The video shows Sandusky's part of the story and also shares the victims. Fairness bias means you get to hear both stories and in this video you do. The video basically says who they think is right and wrong but it shows both parts of the issue. The victims talk about how they feel and how they will never forgive that sick old man. Sandusky talks about how he did not do these things hes being accused of, and he will not say sorry for something he did not do. So at the end of the day you know how both sides of the issue feel, and you can sit back and think about who to believe. When news reporters talk about how they feel about the situation it makes the video even more better. The reporter gets more in depth with the story, and tries to persuade you into what to believe. In this video the reporter doesnt really try and persuade the viewers but does get both stands on the story. This was a really great video to pick! Great job!

  2. Baylea, I agree with your two biases picked. It is bad news bias because, well, it is bad news. It's showing us something very negative happening in our world, and that's what sells, right? No one wants to watch a happy-go-lucky news story. We want, drama, something to be entertained by. The news business is still an entertainment business.
Another Bias I think might fit this situation, if not just the clip, is Narrative Bias. There is story to this, and it does have a beginning, a middle, and an end. We learn about Sandusky in the past, what he has been doing recently, what is presently going on in his life, and about the current conflict. We see the conflict escalate, and then the conflict is resolved. We have a nice neat little story to watch, and we have characters to follow and a story line to uinderstand.
