Workplace Rhetoric

When working in a workplace, or even going out in public there are more signs to make you aware of something than you think. When you are just walking around in public maybe even just the mall, you probably don't realize just how many rhetoric signs you see posted in different areas. Maybe warning you about something like a wet floor sign, or employees must wash hands before returning to work in the bathrooms. They are everywhere you go you just might not notice them. In my opinion they are placed to let people know what is and is not expected of them. You might not have to follow what it says, or do what it says. But they are placed there to let everyone in that area know what is expected.

The piece of work that I picked is a no smoking sign. The one that I took the picture of is located upstairs in the clock tower. As you know these types of signs are posted everywhere at DACC because it is now a totally tobacco free environment. But not just DACC. A lot of places that you go now have no smoking signs posted either outside the facility or even inside and outside. Smoking is something that is your own choice to do. And this sign shows that they do not allow it at DACC or in the buildings so it is expected of you to not do it. Whether you listen or not, the sign is there to tell you that it's not allowed. If you choose to do it you should expect to have consequences come along with that decision.

  1. The environment that this sign creates is a safe and responsible environment. The no smoking makes me believe the area is safe for me and my family. Since the sign is located on a college campus it also creates a better learning environment for the students. The stakeholders are expected to be responsible by not smoking on the campus. The authors of the sign assume that the stakeholders will be responsible of their actions and not smoke. The authors of the sign also assume the stakeholders will follow the instructions. I think this piece of rhetoric is very effective because most people follow the rules. Without the sign people would probably have a lot higher odds of smoking if they did not see the sign at all. The picture makes the sign more noticeable, and the thank you at the end makes sure the author is being polite about their instructions.
