This video might not seem to important because everyday somebody is being hit or abused. This video is good example of a status quo bias, because most people would not think of something like this being on the news but would brush it off like it never happened. People take more interest in the abuse of children and they completely fail to remember that the elderly can be hurt just as well as children can. This issue was shown on the news because the authorities where doing their jobs by finding the man who had assaulted the bus driver. The majority of the people in the world would not think that a situation like this would ever happen because the assume that all people will respect the elderly. People believe that the government does not care about the elderly because they are taking away their health benefits but that assumption is wrong because the government did the right thing in this situation.

The second type of bias that is in this video is the bad news bias. When we turn on the news we are always told how there is something bad going on in the world. This time it is mentioned where an elderly man is being assaulted by an angry teenager because he was asked to leave the bus because he did not pay for the ride. This kind of behavior is all over the place but the difference is that this situation was dealt with when other situations are not or simply ignored. This situation will be handled because the people got involved. If we can get our country to handle situations like this instead of only focusing on the children there would be fewer elderly abuse cases that we hear about. Just because they are elderly it does not mean they do not need as much attention as children, it means that they need to have more attention because they are more fragile. We need to take care of our people and protect them and watch out for them.

  1. I completely agree with the two types of bias you chose. I feel as if with the status quo bias you hit the nail right on the head. Almost everyone believes that the government doesn't care about the elderly, so the fact that this was in the news is good. Although the news cast is mostly pointed toward the teenagers, since they are what caused the event to happen. I also agree with your second type of bias. A local bus would never be on the news unless something bad or interesting happened. No one would ever know about this little old man. I also think that is a good way of them trying to find the kids that hurt him. Showing the bad news on the news cast could potentially help to find the teenagers. I don't think that if a teenager did something nice on a bus, like pay for someone else, that it would ever make the news. People aren't interested in things like that, sadly.

I think that this video also shows Temporal Bias. I know that this isn't the only bad thing that has happened on a public bus. I'm sure that more bad things have happened then good. This is something that happened on a typical day, and in a couple days no one will really care about it. I think that even as the days passes the kid will probably end up getting away with it, just because it isn't something really big that has lasted or will last for a long time. Tomorrow on the news will be something new, someone getting robbed, or something like that. I think it is important that this was on the news, but it might not have been very beneficial.People always want the next big thing. That doesn't mean that the little things aren't important though. Either way, I believe these three bias describe this video very well.

  2. I agree mostly with your selection of biases. I agree entirely with the bad news bias selection though. A story involving teenagers paying giving extra money to bus drivers would likely not make a national news station because it is not nearly as exciting as a story about how teens were violent towards the bus driver. I agree mostly with your status quo selection. The majority of the video shows the bad news bias, but I did notice that at the end of the video the police officer stated that everything would be alright. That final statement affirms your selection. Good job at analyzing the video. Karah, I agree with you as well about your selection of temporal bias. I believe, for the bus driver and the teenagers, that the story is very significant, and will have long term effects on all of their lives. In terms of the American public, I don't see how an assault from one person to another person qualifies as a national issue. I think that assault is an atrocious act and should not be taken lightly, but unfortunately it happens all around the country and should not have become a national news story.

I think that the video shows several biases that were listed by Cline, but I think that the most obvious one was overlooked. I think that the video shows a visual bias more than anything else. I can understand why this is a news story, but it has likely made its way to the national level because of the video that accompanies it. Go back and listen to the audio of the video without watching it. The personal connection is lost because the image of one man physically battering another with his bare hands is omitted. Considering all of the other biases that were presented, I do not think this news story would be on a national news network without the video of the event. I think that if a similar situation happened tomorrow with a better video or video quality, it would become a bigger story than this one. Overall, I think all of these biases worked to get this story on a national news network, when it likely should have remained on the local level.

  3. I will admit, when I first watched this video I was completely shocked. I couldn't believe why someone would do that. What could the bus driver possibly of done that was so bad? It's really sad on what some of society has come to now. The bias you chose are very relevant to the story. The status quo bias works well in this story. Since the video is so short, some people might not really care about what they just saw. Also, since we barely got a look at the suspect who hit the elderly man, it will be difficult to figure out who did it and some people might eventually just forget about it. The other bias you chose, the bad news bias, is demonstrated in a lot of different ways on this specific story. We always see bad stuff on TV and I think that's because journalists want to get a rise out of us, which will also grab our attention better.

The third bias I think is necessary for this story is visual bias. One of the biggest reasons why this is a visual bias story is because it contains the actual video of the elderly man being hit by the teenager. For the audience to actually see it gives us a more powerful emotional reaction, rather than just hearing a news person talk about the assault. If the story did not have the video, then the story would most likely not receieve any attention. This type of similar situation happend a couple of months ago with an elderly bus monitor. Some middle schoolers were bullying her to the point where she cried, which was caught on video and released on the internet. The story got so much publicity that the elderly bus monitor received thousands of dollars in donations. Hopefully, this story gets the same amount of attention as well. These types of situations get the most attention when having a visual bias.
